Our multidisciplinary team brings together obstetrics, neonatology, midwifery, nursing, research and education.

Dr Atul Malhotra

Atul Malhotra

Co-founder · Consultant neonatologist

Atul is a consultant neonatologist, research scientist and educator in Melbourne, Australia.

Atul has a PhD in fundamental neuroscience. His research interests focus on improving outcomes of high-risk infants. He has a special interest in developing new therapies and interventions for babies at risk of adverse brain development. He has been instrumental in the translation of a number of preclinical therapies from the laboratory to the clinic. He has a special interest in regenerative cell therapies for neonatal conditions, and is currently involved in a number of early phase trials of stem cell therapy.

He is a passionate educator especially in inter-professional simulation based education. Through the ONE-Sim program, he has been running maternal and neonatal simulation based education programs in Australia, as well as low- and middle-income countries.

He loves to travel and likes to watch sports in his spare time.

Dr Arunaz Kumar

Arunaz Kumar

Co-founder · Consultant obstetrician-gynaecologist

Arunaz is a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist and educator in Melbourne, Australia.

She has been a discipline lead, coordinator and evaluator of undergraduate medical education, and oversees a number of inter-professional educational initiatives.

She has a PhD in inter-professional education. She also has an interest in simulation based education and skills training, and runs multiple workshops for medical and midwifery/ nursing students in Australia. She co-founded the ONE-Sim program with Atul, which is running in Australia and in multiple locations overseas.

She loves Zumba, and likes to draw and paint in her spare time.

Dr Nisha Khot

Nisha Khot

Consultant obstetrician & educator

Nisha is a consultant obstetrician and educator in Melbourne, Australia.

She is a representative on a number of peak bodies in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Her experience across three countries and three different cultures and health systems has led her to question the lack of gender equity in leadership positions. Along with gender equity, she is passionate about achieving diverse representation in all medical leadership positions. She likes to use social media to educate, amplify and disseminate information on a number of contemporary issues.

She is also a keen educator and joined the ONE-Sim team two years ago.

She loves to meet new people and likes to participate in park runs during her spare time.

Dr Pramod Pharande

Pramod Pharande

Consultant neonatologist & educator

Pramod is a consultant neonatologist and educator in Melbourne, Australia.

He has a special interest in improving neonatal nutrition. He is also very interested in infection prevention and is committed to obtaining a zero rate of infection with central venous lines in neonates. He likes to use point of care ultrasound to improve clinical care, for advancing research in neonatal haemodynamics, and for trainee education and development.

He has recently joined the ONE-Sim team and looks forward to engage with the team and contribute towards disseminating the educational program to more global communities in the near future.

He loves to play with his young boys, and likes to watch cricket in his spare time.

Dr Jen Hocking

Jen Hocking

Registered nurse & midwife

Jen is a registered nurse and midwife who worked in the public maternity system in Victoria for 20 years between 1997 and 2018.

Jen has been teaching into the Bachelor of Midwifery program at the Australian Catholic University for 2 1/2 years and became involved in the Monash inter-professional learning and simulation program in 2019. Jen's PhD was an ethnographic study examining the clinical practice of Lactation Consultants who provide support and care for breastfeeding women which found that relationships were central to their care.

Jen likes yoga, walking her dogs and the Arsenal football club.

Dr Shavi Fernando

Shavi Fernando

Obstetrician-gynaecologist

Shavi graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Honours from Monash University together with a Bachelor of Medical Science with First-Class Honours. Following his internship at Monash Health, Shavi completed the six year specialty training program with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG), and has a PhD in infertility and gynaecology from Monash University.

He enjoys camping and robotic lego and playing with his two young children.

Dr Mahbub Sarkar

Mahbub Sarkar

Educational researcher

Mahbub is a lecturer of educational research at the Monash Centre for Scholarship in Health Education (MCSHE) in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University. Having gained his PhD in Science Education from the Monash Faculty of Education, he pursued his post-doctoral research in the Faculty of Science at Monash University and School of Education at Deakin University.

Mahbub has over 15 years' experience in researching a range of STEMM education issues from early years to undergraduate levels. His current research interests include improving preparedness for practice and employability for healthcare students. Mahbub brings educational research expertise to the ONE-Sim Education team.

Mahbub loves music, movies, sports and novels.

Dr Vijaya Lakshmi Karanam

Vijaya Lakshmi Karanam

Consultant obstetrician

She is a consultant obstetrician at The Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne, and Clinical lecturer at Melbourne University. Vijaya has a PhD in Life sciences and her research interests are pre-eclampsia, Fetal growth restriction and perinatal mental health.

She joined ONE-Sim education program recently and wishes to expand the activities of ONE-Sim more globally.

She loves meeting new people, travelling, cooking and music.

Dr Gopakumar Hariharan

Gopakumar Hariharan

Consultant paediatrician & neonatologist

Gopakumar Hariharan is a consultant Paediatrician and Neonatologist in Mackay, Queensland. He has a special interest in medical education and simulation. He is a senior lecturer with James Cook University and an instructor for various educational programs, including Neoresus, Optimus core and advanced paediatric life support.

Gopakumar enjoys music and reading during his spare time.

Avi Malhotra

Avi Malhotra

Multimedia & video

Avi is a high school student in Melbourne, Australia.

He has been helping with the ONE-Sim workshops since their inception, and enjoys visiting different places the program team visits, and learning about new cultures. He has a special interest in multimedia, video photography and editing, and is the chief curator of the ONE-Sim videos.

He loves to play basketball and squash in his spare time.
